Suburban Barbie Girl
Materialism within Suburbia

Image 1: House with False Front[1]

Suburbia has become a place where what you own is who you are; a place where you, as a person, are defined by your “curb appeal”. It is because of this materialistic perspective that being a neighbor means you are competition.

The topic of materialism within suburbia is an uncommon topic among written works but the evidence is shown within social patterns and human nature. Throughout this paper, the written works, Housing & Single Family Housing along with Domesticity at War will present proof of the social patterns of consumerism within suburbia. As well, the articles “Barbie’s Effects on American Suburban Culture” and “The Dynamics of Competition” will introduce the concept of a psychological influence on the pressing matter of materialism.

  2. Laura, I like so much your topic. It is very interesting. The competitions which are between neighbors is coming from the desire of being perfect and nowadays, it has an effect on people who live in suburbs. I think that it is not common but, very important point which you touch on. Good luck!
