welcome to our online classroom.
This
course is an online seminar and is structured to offer a critical and academic investigation
of many sub-themes of “suburbanism”. As you are all aware, suburbia is vast and
sprawling, so the topics and themes of the semester are as well. You will be
given the opportunity to create focused and specific theories from many
influences, publications, and projects. More importantly, the course will
challenge you to ask critical questions about suburban material culture, the
role of design, its spatial and structural qualities, how design effects the
social make-up of the everyday, and perhaps speculate its future.
Throughout
the course, we will look at multiple scales of suburbia from the XL
[neighborhoods] to the S [single family house]. The course will look into
the history of residential and suburban design initiatives and systems and
reveal how the role of architect and designer is played in the housing market. The ultimate objective of the course is to broaden your
knowledge and sharpen your perspectives about the often negatively viewed, or
critically neglected suburbs.
Once all of you have become authors. please post a quick comment just to be sure everyone has "found their way" onto the blog.
